In a secret lab, actually at home, after hours and at a desk, I've been working on a small project. Today, I'm happy to share a bit of what I've been up to. As most of you know, I am a huge Google Quick Search Box (QSB) for Mac fan. I've written several blog posts about this app and have commented to many friends and family members how much more productive I am when using this tool.Well, as the story continues, awhile back a call went out to early users of QSB. The QSB development team was looking for content to add to their Quick Search Box FAQ over on knol. I had been working on a guide to QSB for this blog and I sent over a couple of links to their team. They seemed generally pleased with my content. I know...I was shocked as well!
So in the wee hours of the evening, I've been creating various knols that explain how to install, configure and use QSB. I've tried to make the knols both fun and informative. I even have assistance from a member of the development team. The cool and sly QSB Helper, as he's listed on knol, is watching my back and making sure I don't mess this thing up.
These knols have started to appear on the Quick Search Box FAQ and it was just a matter of time before folks discovered them. So, if you are a Mac user and not sure what QSB can do for you or if you are a QSB user and want to learn more, be sure to visit my QSB knol collection at:
Current knols in the collection include:
- Introduction to Google Quick Search Box (QSB)
- Download and Install Google Quick Search Box (QSB)
- Start-up and First Searches using Google Quick Search Box (QSB)
- Finder Integration with Google Quick Search Box (QSB)
- Site Searches with Google Quick Search Box (QSB)
- Google Code and Groups for Google Quick Search Box (QSB)
I also have several more knols in the pipeline such as using QSB with social networking sites and how to configure QSB. I'll keep you posted as new knols are completed so be sure to pick one of the subscriptions options in the upper-right corner of this blog to keep up to date.
As readers know, I am my own worst editor. So if you locate errors, let me know. I'd also love to receive your feedback and recommendations for improvement or additions. One of the great features of knol is quick and easy updating. Live updating is as easy as...well...live updating.

Doc, we truly appreciate your work here. Thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteDave (on behalf of the QSB team)
Google QSB seems great except for one minor detail: I see no way to get the application to search my **entire** hard drive. Is this true? If so, this app is kinda useless just like Spotlight on Snow Leopard.
ReplyDeleteSean,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words. For your needs, I recommend Quicksilver (http://www.blacktree.com/). Although QS shares the same developer as QSB, it is a more mature product that includes the ability to specify search locations down to specific directories as well as being able to exclude directories. Be prepared though. There is a bit of a learning curve.
Let me know if this helps and if other Doc’s Tech Notes readers out there have solutions, post a comment and add to this note.
